Twitter Poised to Implement Buy Button to Reduce Gap Between E-Commerce and Social Marketing

Twitter announced recently a plan to test a new ecommerce feature that may have the potential to change the way businesses are using the platform to drive sales.

In a recent announcement Twitter informed businesses they will test a “Buy” button allowing people to make a purchase directly from the tweet. The new Buy button is limited initially only to a select group of artists, bands and non-profit organizations.

According to Tarun Jain, Group Product Manager at Twitter, ” an entire purchase can be completed in just a few taps. After tapping the ‘Buy’ button, you will get additional product details and be prompted to enter your shipping and payment information. Once that’s entered and confirmed, your order information is sent to the merchant for delivery.

The new feature brings Twitter much closer to the desired integration of ecommerce and social marketing. In order to be successful, companies need to start paying attention to the demographics and behavior of their fans and followers on social channels.
